BCU 4 Star Training & Assessment

Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate has the skill level required to lead a group of 4 competent* paddlers in appropriate locations, up to moderate water conditions**. The emphasis is on the application of strokes to achieve suitable techniques and boat control in real situations. White Water Three Star Kayak standard is the appropriate level of performance for paddlers to begin working towards the White Water Four Star Kayak Leaders Award.

*Competent in this instance equtes to a paddler or paddlers who require no coaching to be in that environment
** Moderate Water is grade 2 and upto grade 3 if White Water spec boats are used

Pre-requisites 4 Star Training
White Water Three Star Kayak standard is the appropriate level of performance for paddlers to begin working towards the White Water Four Star Kayak Leaders Award.

• First aid award (minimum 8hrs training including CPR) optional for training
• Previous experience:
• Member of BCU optional for training
• Three Star award optional for training

Pre-requisites 4 Star Assessement
• LR and Registration
• Logged experience must include at least:
• 6 grade 3 river trips as a member of a group
• 6 grade 2-3 river trips as an assistant leader
• 4 Star Kayak Training Leadership and Skills:
• BCU Basic White Water Safety & Rescue
• BCU Membership
• Candidates preferably to be 18 or over at the time of assessment.
• Candidates under the age of 18 can take the award, but cannot be deemed responsible for leadership by law until they turn 18,
• First aid award (minimum 8hrs training including CPR)

From 1st July 2009 all candidates (living in England) wishing to attend a BCU 4 or 5 Star Leader Assessment need to register with Canoe England prior to their assessment using a "Leader award Registration (LR)" form. Please allow at least two weeks to complete the registration process.

Some of the other activities that can be sampled in the area include via ferrata climbing, fly-fishing, mountaineering, mountain biking, canyoning, telepheriqies (cable car), horse riding, walking, swimming and sailing.

There is a Hotel/Restaurant/Bar in the Village of Palon 10 minute walk away from our location. Also the Mountain Hotel/Restaurant 5 Siasons is a 5 minute drive away.
